The right composition, the right time

Planting

We plant trees, shrubs and perennials for family homes in Kráľovský Chlmec and Medzibodrožie so the garden gets a good start from day one, with room to mature naturally.

How planting works

  • Checking the plan and timing. Based on the planting plan and the species involved, we choose a suitable window — usually spring or autumn, when the soil is moist and the plants aren't in full growth.
  • Soil preparation. On the heavier, alluvial soils common near the rivers, we prepare the pit and substrate so the roots don't sit in a water-holding "bowl".
  • The planting itself. Trees, shrubs and perennials go in following the order and spacing set out in the plan, with an eye on their eventual size, not just how they look on planting day.
  • Watering-in and mulching. After planting we water thoroughly and cover the area around the trunk or bed with mulch, which holds moisture and keeps weeds down.
  • Instructions for the first season. We explain how often to water until the plants establish, and what to watch for.

For larger planting jobs we work in stages, so each species keeps its own — often narrow — window; planting everything at once regardless of species leads to weaker establishment.

What to prepare

  • a planting plan, whether it's ours or from another designer,
  • information about the state of the plot — whether the ground is levelled, or first needs grading and soil preparation,
  • water access near the planting area for the first watering,
  • an idea of timing — spring and autumn planting have different windows, and some species have a narrow one,
  • whether you have pets or young children, in case we need to choose species without thorns or toxic fruit.

Why species selection isn't universal here

Medzibodrožie lies on the Latorica plain between the rivers Bodrog, Latorica and Tisa — among the warmest parts of Slovakia, with long, dry summers and annual rainfall of around 550–750 mm. At the same time, soils near the rivers are alluvial and heavier, with a tendency to hold moisture after heavier rain.

This combination — hot, dry summers on one hand, heavier and occasionally waterlogged soil on the other — is why for planting we favour trees and shrubs with deeper root systems and good tolerance for summer drought, such as pedunculate oak, field maple or hornbeam, complemented with perennials and ornamental grasses that manage without daily watering once established. Closer to the rivers, where the ground is wetter, we instead choose species that better tolerate temporary root waterlogging.

We always confirm the exact composition after visiting your specific plot — a general recommendation for the region is only a starting point, never a substitute for looking at your soil and light conditions.
